Journal Writing Workshop

Thoreau On & Off the Page: Journal Writing on the Move

A Creative Writing & Mindfulness Workshop by the Nomadic School of the Senses

Henry D. Thoreau

In his Journal Thoreau crafts a writing practice that awakens our senses. When we read the account of his daily activities we think, feel and perceive alongside him. Thoreau becomes a neighbor and each page of his Journal has something to teach us.

Thoreau’s Journal shows us how to move between private and public spheres, between fact and opinion, between thought and action. Its many registers and themes are living memory of how democratic values can be enacted daily. In the midst of today’s challenges, Thoreau’s prose can teach us the beauty and precision of activism.

Our workshop takes place in Concord during the time of This Ever New Self: THOREAU AND HIS JOURNAL a joint exhibition of The Morgan Library Museum, New York and The Concord Museum, Massachusetts.

In our one-day workshop, participants will learn different journaling techniques alongside listening and mindfulness practices extracted from Thoreau’s Journal.

The workshop starts with a two-hour session at Thoreau Farm. In these morning hours we will introduce the Journal and participants will learn skills necessary for impactful journal writing. After a lunch break, we will visit the exhibition This Ever New Self: Thoreau and His Journal at the Concord Museum. Following our visit, our ‘journalists’ will share their impressions of the exhibition and partake in a two-hour creative writing session at the Thoreau Institute.
