The Reading of Walden

Read On!

Only that day dawns to which we are awake.

The July 8th reading of Walden at Walden will begin at 6 am and end when we hear: The sun is but a morning star... approximately twelve hours. Our list of Thoreau Society members who will be readers is now complete and those who have signed up will receive information packets in the coming weeks. Many special guests, who represent Thoreau’s profound impact on the world today and the Society’s world-wide connections, will be participating in this 150th anniversary celebration. All Society members should plan to attend a portion of this historic event. The reading will take place on the beautiful hillside area above the main beach, and Walden Pond State Reservation staff and Thoreau Society volunteers will be on hand to give directions. See pages 2 and 3 of this booklet for the full range of activities at Walden on this Thursday, and remember that the Thoreau Society Shop at Walden Pond will be open from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm. Bring a picnic and enjoy this special anniversary celebration at the Pond.

Books are the treasured wealth of the world...

Following the reading, beginning at 8:00 pm in the Masonic Temple, our traditional book signing will feature the many Society members who have written on topics related to Thoreau’s life and literature, his times, connections, and continuing impact. All the books will be on hand for purchase, our talented roster of authors will be inscribing their works, and wine, cheese, and good conversation will round out the night.
